Texas Hold’em has seen an exponential increase in popularity in the past 15 years. The boom happened in 2003, when amateur player Chris Moneymaker won the World Series of Poker Main Event. This was historic because Moneymaker’s win pushed forward the idea that anyone could achieve poker glory. He inspired millions of players to begin playing poker online, as he had won entry into the World Series through an online qualifier. Another factor in poker’s rise to mainstream popularity, was the invention of ‘hole card cameras’ which allowed the television broadcast to show viewers the cards that each player held during the tournament. These two events, which both happened in 2003, encouraged many players to begin to play poker online. However, the game has been around for a lot longer than that. Hold’em poker was invented in Texas in the early 1900’s and was introduced to Las Vegas gambling culture in 1967. Prior to the rise of Texas Hold’em, 5 card draw was the most popular poker game. Smart players realized that Hold’em presented a greater opportunity for strategy, as it has 4 rounds of betting compared to only 2 rounds in draw poker. Woodbine casino expansion 2018. Since Hold’em offers more opportunity for strategy, that means that professionals had a greater advantage and therefore they heavily promoted Texas Hold’em. With the support of professional poker players, Texas Hold’em became featured in the Main Event of the World Series of Poker in 1972, and has maintained its place as the world’s signature poker game ever since. Millions of players now play poker online every day, and the vast majority of them play Poker Texas Hold’em.

*Texas Holdem Poker Blinds Schedule Chart
When you are in the casino at the beginning of a poker game, and you have lots of chips, the blinds are something you hardly notice. Towards the end of a poker night, especially if things aren’t going so well and your chip pile is lower than you’d like it to be, or the blind bets are increasing in size, then the blind can really eat into your stack.
Some poker games have antes – forced bets. But Texas Holdem doesn’t, meaning you can fold your cards without betting. Texas Holdem poker does have something called blinds though. They are another type of forced bet, but this time before you have been dealt your cards. Like antes, they exist so that there is a cost to playing, so the poker games don’t go on and on with players just waiting to be dealt a great hand. Paul Phua thinks that the blind keeps the momentum up, and ensures the game of poker finishes within a reasonable time frame – especially since the blinds often increase in value during a game of Texas Holdem to speed things up even further.
Problem Gambling and Poverty A developing body of evidence suggests that problem gambling prevalence rates are higher in populations experiencing poverty when compared to the gen- eral population. The temporal order of poverty and problem gambling remains unclear although some research suggests problem gambling precedes pov- erty. How can gambling lead to poverty. There are mainly two blinds in Texas Holdem – the big and small blind, but there can sometimes be three players who have to make them.
South beach casino restaurant menu. The name comes from the fact that players are being asked to bet without seeing their hands. They are betting blind, with no knowledge of the hand’s worth. So in the casino, whether you hold a 2 and a 3 unsuited, or a pair of aces – before you see your hand it’s all the same.
Paul Phua says the blind also marks potential poker strategy. Depending on your position around the poker table in a casino, or a social poker night where the dealer changes as the “button” moves from player to player, you will have to give certain blinds. Being in the small blind spot on a poker table is a disadvantage because you will be the first to act in every round after the flop. But Paul Phua’s poker tip is to remember never feel committed to a pot simply because you have paid your blind, especially in Texas Holdem, and not be afraid to enter a pot if you have a strong enough hand.

So if everyone starts with 1000 in chips the first big blind should be 10/20. Blind period is the time each blind lasts: Typical tournament blind periods are 10, 15, 20, 30, or 60 minutes.
*The following blind schedule is for a tournament with 10 people, set to last 3 hours with 20-minute rounds. Each player will begin with 5000 chips and the small and big blinds will start at 25/50.
*For example starting blind might be $10/$20, but after half an hour it will go up to $20/$40. Two factors affect blinds: 1- Blind structure, and 2- Blind Period. Blind Structure: is the structure that blinds go up based on. Typically the first big blind should be 1/50 of the starting chips amount. Blinds usually double after each blind period.Texas Holdem Poker Blinds Schedule Chart

Let’s talk about inviting visitors. Why invite them? There are several reasons why we want to have visitors… but probably the most significant is to fill open categories in the chapter. For some, inviting visitors is easy. But many of us seem to struggle with it a little bit. I think it is because we tend to make it too complicated…. That is, we say way too much while we are trying to convince someone to be our guest. Well, guess what? It’s actually pretty easy if you keep your message simple.
To illustrate, I’m happy to have two members of The Next Level Theater Company, David Comfort and Eric Gibboney act it out for you. Del lago resort & casino waterloo new york.
David: So, Eric… it’s been great learning more about what you do. Life Insurance is such a great thing… everyone should have a policy!
Eric: (laughs), Yes, I agree. Thanks for this meeting, it was interesting learning about what you do as well. All businesses need a website! How can gambling lead to poverty.
David: You know, I just thought of something. But before I go on, are you in a position where you can handle more business? Do you have room for growth?
Eric: Yes, always.
David: I am a member of a networking group and we have been looking for someone who sells life insurance that we can pass referrals to. Do you like to receive referrals?
Eric: Yes, always.
David: We meet once a week to get to know each other better because that makes it easier for us to pass referrals. I’d like to introduce you to the group. Would you consider coming as my guest? I think you would do very well in there!
Eric: Yes! Why not?
David: Here are the details on this card. Our group is called The Next Level and here is where we meet, the day and time. Suggest you arrive 15 minutes early and bring lots of business cards as I am sure many people will want one. Breakfast is on us. I can pretty much guarantee that you’re going to have fun!

Thanks guys! Do you see how simple it can be? Let me run through the basic steps here:
Step one: Ask the person if they want to grow their business. It’s very rare that someone will say ‘no’ to this!Bni Visitors Day Educational Slot Games
Step two: Tell them that you have a group of peers who are looking to give referrals to someone who does what they do!Bni Visitors Day Educational Slot Program

Poker November 9 2018

ContentsYou’ve probably seen the news that the World Series of Poker‘s nine-year experiment known as the
The final table is set in the 2018 World Series of Poker $10,000 buy-in main event. From a field of 7,874 entries, the second largest field in the tournament’s history, now only nine players remain. The November Nine was the name used to refer to the final nine contestants, or final table, at the Main Event of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) from 2008 to 2016. The winner of the WSOP Main Event is considered to be the World Champion of Poker.
Nov 9, 2018 - Nov 11, 2018. Catfish Bend Casino holds their Southeast Iowa Poker Classic November 9-11, a five-event series with $5,000 added. Players are vying for the most coveted prize in poker – the WSOP Gold Bracelet and the winner’s prize of $8,000,000. WHEN: Sunday, October 30 through Tuesday, November 1 Sun. 30 – All 9 Players – 8:30-11pm ET (Live) ESPN; After 11:00pm moves to ESPN2; Mon. 31 – Final 4 players – 8:00-11pm ET (Live) ESPN2. ’The Garden City Poker tournament is always a great community event, and raises critical funding for our recipients.’ Saturday, November 9, 2018. 6:00 PM - Doors Open; 7:00 PM. November Nine is mercilessly coming to an end, unless this is the first poker-related article you’ve read today.
In a press release, ESPN announced a new four-year partnership with Poker Central will overhaul WSOP coverage. The changes point to a rededication to poker programming by ESPN.What’s in store for the 2017 WSOP on ESPNPoker November 9 2018 Calendar
The most notable change is the end of the four-month hiatus between the final table being reached and when it’s played. According to the press release, players will go on a two-day break (July 18 and 19) when they reach the final table. That’s followed by three days of live-streaming on ESPN from July 20-22.
This is big news in and of itself. But because of the change, ESPN is also ending its prohibition of live streaming during the preliminary days of the WSOP Main Event.
Beginning on Day 1a, ESPN will broadcast several hours of live-streaming coverage daily on its networks. Poker Central picks up the slack during non-ESPN hours.
A live stream of the entire Main Event is something poker enthusiasts have been clamoring for. Now, it’s something the WSOP apparently sees as beneficial to its product.
“ESPN has been our home since 2002 and we’re delighted to extend the relationship into the next decade,” Ty Stewart, the executive director of the WSOP said in the press release. “Having every day live coverage of the WSOP Main Event is truly a huge commitment on behalf of ESPN and Poker Central and we look forward to delivering to our faithful audience wall-to-wall action from the outset for the very first time.”The change is long past due
It’s no secret that I’ve never been a fan of the November Nine concept, and have called for its end for several years.
Still, the November Nine was a solid experiment (it simply lasted too long), created with good intentions.
The break was supposed to accomplish three main things:
*Allow ESPN and the WSOP to promote the final table. The promotion of the WSOP final table was never realized, even in 2009 when Phil Ivey was a November Niner.
*Allow ESPN to produce lead-up episodes to the final table with viewers unaware of who won the tournament. But viewers were still aware of who made the final table and every other detail of the tournament. With social media, spoilers continue to be an issue.
*Turn the WSOP final table into an event, with pageantry and a sizable live audience. With participants flying in their friends and family, this was moderately successful.
Unfortunately, The November Nine format’s negatives far outweighed whatever positive benefits it created.A poker tournament without continuity
What the November Nine did accomplish was killing any momentum between the first seven days of the WSOP Main Event and the final table. The final table was so detached from the rest of the tournament, it was more like two separate events.
The players had already secured huge paydays with the potential to win even more. As such, most November Niners hired the best coaches money could buy. They studied footage of their opponents.
The end result was extremely high-level poker with very few mistakes or unorthodox play. No one was tired or on tilt. Every participant entered the final table with a clear head.Poker November 9 2018 Predictions
This was a huge detriment to the better players, especially the ones with lots of TV time their opponents could study. Furthermore, any amateur player making a deep run could quickly close the skill gap during the hiatus and shore up weak points in their games.
Non-stop, high level play might be great for the small percentage of poker purists out there. But most viewers are looking for the Qui Nguyen‘s of the world. Someone who’s overly active, doesn’t have standard bet-sizes, and capable of attempting wild bluffs.Poker November 9 2018
This is far more likely when players are mentally stressed after a whirlwind 10 days of poker to reach the final table and the gravity of the situation (or the money on the line) hasn’t fully sank in.

It’s been a shame that the poker community hasn’t been able to properly package its flagship event across all the platforms people want.
Del lago resort & casino waterloo new york. The absence of a real-time live stream of the lead-up to the final table was akin to the watching edited-down episodes of the first eight innings of Game 7 of a World Series (of baseball) that occurred months prior, followed by a live finale of the ninth inning.Poker November 9 2018 Holiday
Good for ESPN, Poker Central and the World Series of Poker for correcting this. The changes made by ESPN and Poker Central will be good for the World Series of Poker and for poker in general.

Qt5 Signal Slot Example

2021年5月16日
Register here: http://gg.gg/ulx2c
Nd the index of the signal and of the slot Keep in an internal map which signal is connected to what slots When emitting a signal, QMetaObject::activate is called. It calls qt metacall (generated by moc) with the slot index which call the actual slot. Qt already provides signals and slots for its classes, which you can use in your application. For example, QPushButton has signal clicked, which will be triggered when the user clicks on the button. Another example: the QApplication class has a slot quit function, which can be called when you want to terminate your application. Question regarding best practice for connecting signals and slots I have an object that gets dynamically created and deleted, when created it attempts to connect Signal ’A’ to Slot ’B’ on the main window and all it’s child windows (slot is named the same in all windows for this purpose). Connecting in Qt 5. There are several ways to connect a signal in Qt 5. Qt 5 continues to support the old string-based syntax for connecting signals and slots defined in a QObject or any class that inherits from QObject (including QWidget).Qt Signal Slot Example C
Demonstrates multi-thread programming using Qt.
This is simply a function that gets called when the signal occurs. In the above example, our slot shows a message box. The term slot is important when using Qt from C, because slots must be declared in a special way in C. In Python however, any function can be a slot – we saw this above.
Contents:Overview
In the Custom Type Example, we showed how to integrate custom types with the meta-object system, enabling them to be stored in QVariant objects, written out in debugging information and used in signal-slot communication.
In this example, we create a new value class, Block, and register it with the meta-object system to enable us to send instances of it between threads using queued signals and slots. The Block Class
The Block class is similar to the Message class described in the Custom Type Example. It provides the default constructor, copy constructor and destructor in the public section of the class that the meta-object system requires. It describes a colored rectangle.
We will still need to register it with the meta-object system at run-time by calling the qRegisterMetaType() template function before we make any signal-slot connections that use this type. Even though we do not intend to use the type with QVariant in this example, it is good practice to also declare the new type with Q_DECLARE_METATYPE().
The implementation of the Block class is trivial, so we avoid quoting it here. The Window Class
We define a simple Window class with a public slot that accepts a Block object. The rest of the class is concerned with managing the user interface and handling images. How can gambling lead to poverty.
The Window class also contains a worker thread, provided by a RenderThread object. This will emit signals to send Block objects to the window’s addBlock(Block) slot.
The parts of the Window class that are most relevant are the constructor and the addBlock(Block) slot.
The constructor creates a thread for rendering images, sets up a user interface containing a label and two push buttons that are connected to slots in the same class.
In the last of these connections, we connect a signal in the RenderThread object to the addBlock(Block) slot in the window.
The rest of the constructor simply sets up the layout of the window.
The addBlock(Block) slot receives blocks from the rendering thread via the signal-slot connection set up in the constructor:
We simply paint these onto the label as they arrive. The RenderThread Class
The RenderThread class processes an image, creating Block objects and using the sendBlock(Block) signal to send them to other components in the example.
The constructor and destructor are not quoted here. These take care of setting up the thread’s internal state and cleaning up when it is destroyed.
Processing is started with the processImage() function, which calls the RenderThread class’s reimplementation of the QThread::run() function:
Ignoring the details of the way the image is processed, we see that the signal containing a block is emitted in the usual way:
Each signal that is emitted will be queued and delivered later to the window’s addBlock(Block) slot.Registering the Type
In the example’s main() function, we perform the registration of the Block class as a custom type with the meta-object system by calling the qRegisterMetaType() template function:
This call is placed here to ensure that the type is registered before any signal-slot connections are made that use it.
The rest of the main() function is concerned with setting a seed for the pseudo-random number generator, creating and showing the window, and setting a default image. See the source code for the implementation of the createImage() function.Further Reading
This example showed how a custom type can be registered with the meta-object system so that it can be used with signal-slot connections between threads. For ordinary communication involving direct signals and slots, it is enough to simply declare the type in the way described in the Custom Type Example.
In practice, both the Q_DECLARE_METATYPE() macro and the qRegisterMetaType() template function can be used to register custom types, but qRegisterMetaType() is only required if you need to perform signal-slot communication or need to create and destroy objects of the custom type at run-time.
More information on using custom types with Qt can be found in the Creating Custom Qt Types document.

To activate the various functions such as play and stop on the dialog, the button clicked events emit the play() and stop() signals, which are connected to the play() and stop() slots of QMediaPlayer.Qt5 Signal Slot Examples
We can get the volume (and set our user interface representation)
and we can make widget ’volume’ changes change the volume
The example also allows us to change various video properties by means of the QVideoWidget object. We can go to Full Screen mode with a single button click, and back again. Or if we press the ’Color Options’ dialog button we can have access to more subtle influences. The dialog has a set of sliders so that we can change the brightness, contrast, hue and saturation of the video being watched. The connect() statements are in pairs so that changes to either the user interface widget (the relevant slider) or the QVideoWidget object will update the other object.

*Woodbine Casino Expansion 2018 News
*Woodbine Casino Expansion 2018 News
April 17, 2018
By Arianne Robinson
*With one day left until the City of Toronto votes on the proposed Woodbine casino expansion, a community and labour coalition has made clear that unless it is made a signatory in a legally binding community benefits agreement, the northern Etobicoke community of Rexdale is not going to give its support to the project.
*Work on a casino expansion could begin by early 2018, OLG said in its statement, however Ontario Gaming will have to meet conditions set by the city. City council voted 25-19 in favour of expanding gambling facilities at Woodbine in 2015. Mayor awaits ’vision’ for Woodbine.
Mayor John Tory’s Executive Committee moved forward proposed new developments for the Woodbine Racetrack, which involve expanding the complex to include hotels, restaurants, and a casino.
The city will get a $16 million hosting fee – which is approximately 2.2 per cent of the total $750 million gross “slot revenue,” according to OLG financial statements – the city’s acting chief financial officer, Joe Farag, told the committee on Monday.
Apr 26, 2018 Woodbine Racetrack will be home to a large casino in Toronto. On Thursday, Toronto City Council approved expanded gaming at the popular racetrack, by a vote of 26 to 15.
Local councillor Michael Ford was enthusiastic about the future of the development.
“What goes beyond this project [in future phases of a master plan that is not before the committee], let me tell you – it is a miniature city of investment about connecting with the local colleges and universities in the area, creating green space, residential development, and the whole nine yards… it is the greater vision for the north-west. It just doesn’t stop here,” Ford said.
“I do believe this is a significant investment in [solutions to fix] some of the challenges we see in North Etobicoke. This [plan] will go a long way to help us improve the economic viability of the north-west [part of the city].”
Mayor John Tory endorsed the plan. “There’s no such thing as a bad deal for the city that produces 5,000 or more jobs for people who need them, and many of those jobs are going to go to local people [in Rexdale]. So there’s no such thing as that being a bad deal. “You won’t hear me describing a bad deal out of thousands of jobs for people.” Tory said, referring to an earlier comment made by a councillor criticizing the plan. Woodbine Casino Expansion 2018 News
Mike Williams, the city’s general manager for Economic Development & Culture, said that while the Woodbine complex will create approximately 5,000 jobs (half in the casino and half outside in hotels and restaurants), the real increase to the city’s economy is actually less. “Somewhere else in the GTA, jobs won’t happen, so therefore the net impact, taken overall, is a third of that number – is about 1,600,” Williams said.
Members of the public who came to speak about the item were skeptical of the community benefits in the plan before the committee.
“What we have in front of us is not a significant stretch for the operator in terms of what it would do normally,” John Cartwright of the Toronto and York Region Labour Council said in his deptuation to the mayor, Executive Committee, and staff in attendance. “There’s a number of things missing [from the plan], including a living wage, childcare, hard targets on construction, a labour peace agreement that was supposed to be part of the original frame, and monitoring and enforcement.”
Theo Lagakos, president of the Public Service Alliance of Canada Local 533, told councillors, “If you look at the gaming industry, these guys live and breath trying to squeeze as much money out of people’s pockets as possible… It’s your civic duty to make them responsible to create good jobs.”
Asked about the potential positive impact of making childcare available on the site, Lagakos said the need can’t be understated.
“We have a lot of single moms, and a lot of times they’ll come to me, they’ll come to the union office, and they’re trying to manage things, manage their life, and most of them can’t afford any type of childcare… you hear horror stories. Sometimes someone will tell me in confidence, ‘I’ll leave my kid at home and work the night shift.’ You can’t do that, but people are desperate.
“That’s what Rexdale is. It’s a desperate, desperate area of the city, and no offense to Mr. Ford there, but nothing, nothing has been done in the last 30 years in Rexdale. My opinion.”
Staff recommendations for the expansion of gambling at Woodbine Racetrack and community benefits related to developments by Woodbine Entertainment Group are expected to be debated at the next council meeting. It’s official! Toronto—Canada’s largest city—now has casino table games, thanks to the Great Canadian Gaming (CGC) and Woodbine Racetrack and will perhaps include sports betting.

On Friday, 31 September, the Great Canadian Gaming Corporation announced that its subsidiary, One Toronto Gaming (OTG), had received the necessary municipal zoning approvals from the City of Toronto to offer table games at Casino Woodbine—the previously slots-only casino attached to the fabled racetrack.

Over the years, the casino industry has considerably evolved in Toronto—which has always been a popular gambling city—and across the Ontario province. Unlike the British Columbia casino industry, Toronto doesn’t have as much scope or influence. However, with the launch of live table games, it is becoming evident that Toronto is beginning to catch up, and there are a lot of things to expect as Toronto-based casinos begin to develop.

While British Columbia casinos claim their revenue is declining due to the introduction of anti-money laundering rules and regulations, it seems like Toronto and Ontario are beginning to wax stronger. As a result of the approval, the Woodbine casino has formally launched 50 “live dealer” tables alongside around 200 electronic tables and ‘stadium’ style gaming positions that can accommodate a further 100+ positions.

According to OTG, it expects to include an additional 50 live tables and over 300 additional slot machines – bringing the property’s total slots count to around 3,000 – in the fourth quarter of this year, increasing the available jobs in the province.

“This is another important achievement for One Toronto Gaming, made possible by the hard work from our team in collaboration with stakeholders including OLG, our regulators, and the City of Toronto,” stated Rod Baker, the President and Chief Executive Officer of One Toronto Gaming in a report.

“This not only is a significant step in the expansion and overall development of Casino Woodbine, but this additional gaming amenity has generated over 400 new jobs and will create another 300 by the end of 2018.”

Earlier this year, Toronto City Council approved the planned expansion of Woodbine expected to be completed in 2022. The proposed casino expansion at the Woodbine Racetrack would bring in about $30 million in annual revenue for the city and equally provide hundreds of jobs to local workers.

Interim city manager Giuliana Carbone noted that in 2022, when the facility is fully built-out, the city can expect to receive $26 to $31 million a year, according to estimates from the province’s Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG). Also, by the end of 2022, the new facility is expected to provide roughly 3,700 new jobs and Carbone reported that Ontario Gaming plans to ensure “at least half of the employees will be working full-time after two years of operation.”
Woodbine Casino Expansion 2018 News
With the successful addition of table gaming in the casino, it’s almost certain that residents might not have to wait that long to begin witness significant changes in the area.

After posting an impressive second-quarter results, it safe to assume that Great Canadian Gaming is taking giant steps to become a dominant force in the Canadian casino world. However, this is one of the key developments for the future of the industry and as a result, it is going to open the door for a lot more interest in casino gaming—hence bringing more revenue to the area and helping the industry grow significantly.

Osage Casino in Ponca City reopened on Friday morning with a reduced capacity and hours. The casino has been closed since March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Byron Bighorse, CEO of Osage Casinos, was at the reopening on Friday and was thrilled one of the properties could open. “The Ponca City location was ready and willing to step up to reopen. I can’t say enough about the fantastic team we have here at the Ponca City location.”
“We are going to see how the demand goes right now,” said Bighorse. “There is no hotel, no food service and no table games. The convenience store is open. Our top priority is to keep our patrons and employees safe.”Osage Casino Ponca City Restaurants
The bar area at Osage Casino is open. “The area is open but we have removed some tables and chairs at the bar. We want to encourage social distancing. Obviously if someone is sitting with their significant other there isn’t a problem there. We will have a problem when crowds gather to watch something on television. If I see things are getting out of hand, I won’t hesitate to shut things down.”
As part of their reopening guidelines, all employees are required to wear masks until further notice. “Guests will be strongly encouraged to wear a mask and we will make them available, but we will not ask anyone to leave if they do not wear a mask,” said Bighorse.
Every other machine is also turned off inside the casino as a way to promote social distancing.
The Ponca City location will be open from 10 a.m to midnight daily and until 2 a.m. on the weekend.

Problem gambling is a hidden public health concern, especially among people who experience poverty and homelessness, with studies from North America showing a combined prevalence of lifetime problem and pathological gambling ranging from 29.8% to 58.2%. Service providers in the non-addiction sectors (e.g., housing and primary health care) have not traditionally screened their clients for problem gambling behaviours or concerns. In an effort to build multi-sector awareness and stimulate discussion about problem gambling, poverty, and homelessness, we invited practitioners from the social, health, and human services community and people with lived experience to join a knowledge translation and mobilization event in which we used the World Café method. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the knowledge generated about problem gambling, poverty, and homelessness from the perspectives of the World Café participants. We identified themes that align with quality of care espoused by the World Health Organization, Health Quality Ontario, and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. These themes include delivering care that is highly accessible to clients who are experiencing poverty in a one-stop shop that is timely and efficient, patient centred and equitable with respect to gender and sexual orientation, culturally sensitive, and trauma informed and that provides a therapeutic alliance and safe space to enhance well-being. Participants identified the need for a plain-language, accessible definition of problem gambling and the need to create awareness of the harm associated with problem gambling in targeted messages that engage clients, policy makers, and the general public.

Introduction
Both problem gambling (Korn, 2000; Korn & Shaffer, 1999) and homelessness (Begin, Casavant, Chenier, & Dupuis, 1999; Echenberg & Jensen, 2008; Hwang, 2001; Rogers, Button, & Hume, 2005) are serious public health concerns. Several studies in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada have documented an association between problem gambling and homelessness (Crane et al., 2005; Gattis & Cunningham-Williams, 2011; Holdsworth, Tiyce, & Hing, 2012; Sharman, Dreyer, Clark, & Bowden-Jones, 2016). Research indicates that the combined prevalence of lifetime problem and pathological gambling ranges from 29.8% to 58.2% among people who are experiencing homelessness or using a community service (Lepage, Ladouceur, & Jacques, 2000; Matheson, Devotta, Wendaferew, & Pedersen, 2014; Nower, Eyrich-Garg, Pollio, & North, 2015). Studies also indicate that some subpopulations of those who are experiencing homelessness are at greater risk of developing problem gambling, such as veterans (Edens & Rosenheck, 2012), men (Matheson et al., 2014), and newly homeless adults aged 50 years and older (Crane et al., 2005).
The relationship between problem gambling and homelessness is complex. Studies find that multiple concerns associated with poverty, such as unemployment, bankruptcy, unaffordable rent, and eviction, contribute to the relationship between problem gambling and homelessness (Antonetti & Horn, 2001; Crane et al., 2005; Holdsworth et al., 2012; Williams, Rehm, & Stevens, 2011). Problem gambling is also associated with a variety of psychiatric conditions in persons who experience homelessness. In an analysis of survey data from 275 predominately African American individuals who were experiencing homelessness, Nower et al. (2015) found that problem gambling was associated with an increased risk of meeting diagnostic criteria for psychiatric disorders and substance dependency (see also Ferentzy, Skinner, & Matheson, 2013). The associations between problem gambling, mental health, poverty, and substance abuse illustrate the need to engage with diverse social and health service agencies to design interventions and services that are effective for persons who are experiencing homelessness and problem gambling (Guilcher et al., 2016).
Early speculation on the direction of the relationship between problem gambling and homelessness indicates bi-directionality (Sharman et al., 2016). An analysis of quantitative data with 72 persons who were experiencing homelessness in the United Kingdom indicates that problem gambling predominantly leads to homelessness. However, the authors note that some gambling behaviours develop after individuals become homeless (Sharman et al., 2016). Exploratory qualitative studies also found that problem gambling contributes to homelessness. For example, in their analysis of qualitative interviews with 18 homelessness service providers and 17 of their clients in Australia, Holdsworth et al. (2012) noted that gambling negatively affects financial security, relationships, and support networks.
Services for problem gambling screening, prevention, and treatment are scarce and prospective clients may be unfamiliar with gambling-focused services and/or dissatisfied with those that are available (Evans & Delfabbro, 2005; Guilcher et al., 2016; Hamilton-Wright et al., 2016; Pulford et al., 2009; Scull & Woolcock, 2005). Crane et al. (2005) identified a prevalence rate of 15% for problem gambling in newly homeless older adults in the United States, England, and Australia; however, the authors noted that few adults accessed support for gambling. A recent qualitative study that explored service access for men who experience problem and pathological gambling called for an expansion of services to address problem gambling. Specifically, researchers argued that there is a need for integrated services that address concurrent social and health needs such as housing, mental health, substance use, and poverty (Guilcher et al., 2016). Nower et al. (2015) recommended that agencies who serve people who are experiencing homelessness screen for problem gambling; however, this requires that agencies be equipped to provide access to population-appropriate services. Persons who experience homelessness are highly stigmatized and less likely to seek help for problem gambling behaviours or for associated financial, relationship, and health problems (Baxter, Salmon, Dufresne, Carasco-Lee, & Matheson, 2016; Holdsworth et al., 2012; Suurvali, Hodgins, Toneatto, & Cunningham, 2012).
This paper presents the findings from a unique community engagement event, the World Café, which gathered human, social, and health sector participants together to generate collective knowledge about problem gambling, poverty, and homelessness.Gambling Services Considerations
Research on service delivery and service needs for problem gambling is scarce, more so for people who are experiencing poverty and homelessness. In a recent qualitative study (Pickering, Spoelma, Dawczyk, Gainsbury, & Blaszczynski, 2019), service users (n = 32) provided their perspectives on recovery. They viewed it as a continuous process, one through which service users can develop insight into the psychological and environmental factors that promote gambling. This insight enhances people’s sense of empowerment to overcome the addiction. The service users perceived that engagement in non-gambling activities, nurturing of social networks, stabilization of finances, and a concentrated focus on overall well-being were important aspects of recovery. An Australian study with clinicians and managers (n = 41) within the mental health service environment in Victoria identified barriers to gambling screening (Rodda, Manning, Dowling, Lee, & Lubman, 2018). These barriers included competing priorities, perceived importance of routine screening, lack of access to screening tools and resources, considerations of patient responsiveness, and the need for workforce training. Richard, Baghurst, Faragher, and Stotts (2017) reviewed the literature on the relation between sociocultural factors (e.g., race, ethnicity, culture) and gambling. They found little research in this area and much of it marked by inconsistent findings. The authors suggest that treatment approaches need to consider differences in net financial worth, cultural belief systems that enable gambling and negate help seeking because of perceptions of stigma, and acculturalization. In a review by Zakiniaeiz and Potenza (2018), the authors noted that the evidence on gender differences in gambling and help seeking is scant from the service delivery perspective. Some potential treatment considerations for gambling and substance misuse include gender differences in motivation to seek help and biological and sociocultural differences.
Priebe et al. (2012) spoke with 154 experts across 14 European countries from a variety of disciplines (physicians, allied health care providers, community service specialists, lawyers, and those with backgrounds in social science/policy). Using semi-structured interviews and case vignettes, the authors identified components of good practice in mental health services among socially marginalized groups, including outreach programs; integration, collaboration, and coordination of services to address the varied needs of these populations; and promotion of service awareness among potential service users and health care practitioners (also see Wieczorek & Dąbrowska, 2018). Aligned with these findings, Lewis, Black, and McMullen (2016) found that community service agencies are not equipped to address problem gambling. Training and improved provider cross-communication is necessary to enhance service coordination.
Wieczorek and Dąbrowska (2018) conducted qualitative interviews with 30 patients and 15 professionals in Poland. One focus of this research was to identify how people choose a gambling treatment facility. Findings indicated that choice was related to perceptions of ease of access (e.g., travel distance), quality and reputation of the clinic, assurances of anonymity, and patient knowledge of the treatment landscape. Factors that appeared to affect treatment included lack of availability of outpatient gambling treatment services, long wait lists, and groups that did not cater specifically to people who were experiencing a gambling disorder.
In an effort to mobilize knowledge from problem gambling research and stimulate discussion about connections between recovery services for problem gambling, poverty, and homelessness, we invited practitioners from the social, health, and human services community to join a World Café. The World Café is a specific type of knowledge translation and mobilization event that provides participants with a welcoming café-style environment (Brown and Isaacs, 2005). Participants engage in facilitated dialogue wherein conversations are constructed and reconstructed in order to move individual knowledge and experience toward collective knowledge and actionable solutions. This method allows participants to provide feedback and contribute their perspectives to research knowledge. The purpose of this paper is to summarize and mobilize the collective knowledge generated about problem gambling, poverty, and homelessness from the perspectives of the participants of the World Café.MethodEthics Statement
This study was part of a broader research grant that received ethics approval from the Research Ethics Board of St. Michael’s Hospital. Participants of the World Café signed an audio and visual consent form as required by the St. Michael’s Hospital Communications Department. The World Café Method
The World Café (Brown et al., 2005) is modelled after appreciative inquiry, which emphasizes strength-based learning and mutual creativity, to move participants and facilitators as a collective group from discussions of questions to solutions that can produce actionable change (Cooperrider, Whitney, & Stavros, 2008; Emlet & Moceri, 2012). The World Café offers participants an informal, safe, and intimate setting for the exchange of ideas with the purpose of blending diverse knowledge and experience into learning. World Cafés are designed to move the conversations from the personal, to the collective and present moment, to the future (Brown et al., 2005).
The World Café aligns with the Knowledge Creation phase of the Knowledge to Action Framework wherein knowledge is tailored to create products, services, and tools that are useful for promoting change in a local context (Crane et al., 2005; Field, Booth, Ilott, & Gerrish, 2014). The World Café gathers participants into small groups seated together at café tables. These groups are invited and encouraged to engage in progressive rounds of conversations that inform larger interconnected conversations (Fouché & Light, 2011). In this way, intimate café table conversations form the stepping stones to thoughts on collective action (Fouché & Light, 2011). As Brown et al. (2005) suggests, the setting and structure of the conversations within the World Café method promote a natural progression in conversation from discussions of individual experience to deeper discussions on the subject matter. The ultimate goal is to move knowledge toward actionable solutions.Participant Recruitment
This research was conducted in partnership with the Good Shepherd Ministries (GSM), a non-profit organization that provides shelter, addiction, and mental health services to men in Toronto, Canada. The research team worked with GSM to compile a list of 50 contacts from community and government agencies within the Greater Toronto and Hamilton areas in Ontario, Canada. An email invitation was sent to each of these participants and 18 persons agreed to participate in the World Café. In total, 14 of the 18 persons attended the café event. In addition, the staff invited participants with lived experience of gambling and precarious housing to participate. Two participants with lived experience attended the World Café, for a total of 16 participants. Ten different organizations represented the housing and shelter sectors, social services, gambling support services, family and community medicine, municipal government, and public health. Two of the organizations had more than one representative in attendance. The other organizations (n = 8) had one representative each. Two days prior to the event, we placed a reminder call to the participants. The participants themselves included service providers, clinicians, clients, and policy makers. Participants received a lunch and a gift bag as a toke
